Deco Sketch

Mobile App available for iOS + Android + NOOK

I made a few new years resolutions at the end of 2011 and manifested them all by the end of January 2012. One of those resolutions was to publish my own app. The result is Deco Sketch. Now in its third update at version 1.6 it boasts the ability to load your own photos and sketch with 8 brush types and 15 adjustable options.

There’s a budding community on instagram creating very cool work with both Deco Sketch alone and combined with other apps.  I use it  fairly often myself to fulfill a creative urge on the go. I’m constantly thinking up new features and working towards a big version 2 release later this year.

Kinect + openFrameworks + you

On Saturday November 17, 2012 I debuted my first openFrameworks project using Kinect at Create:Fixate’s Magnetic. Actually It was my first openFrameworks project and my second time using the Kinect. My original plan was to create a motion version of Deco Sketch. That proved to be a bit ambitious so I chose to go simpler.

The response from attendees was incredible. At times there were 8-10 people waving their hands at the projection fighting for control. When users connected with the visuals on screen and realized their ability to manipulate it, most produced a childlike smile as they got lost in the piece.

Jack Got Jacked

Wump, wump concert visuals

In early 2012 I was commissioned to create a music video that would be used in Jack Beats concert tour for their song Jack Got Jacked. The request was to mimic the style of Android Jones.

I created a “sketch” app for the creation of the visuals. Playing back the audio, I screen captured the movement of the sketches and then later edited it the clips together with After Effects along with timeline tweened vector animations created in Flash. I’m net yet allowed to show it  publicly as they are still on tour and the video is still being used.

Generative Art Prints

I was jazzed to show off my work from the Jack Beats gig but unfortunately couldn’t. It got me thinking…

After shipping of the video and playing with the sketch app a bit, it occurred to me to make some art prints and offer them up for those that might want to hang them on their walls. Society6 gave me a place to do just that.  You can order framed prints, canvases, iPhone cases, t-shirts and various other mediums. Kinect Ghosts

A garage sized video game for trick or treaters

Here’s a look at my first Kinect project. It’s a simple game for up to 2 people where the goal is to “pop” all the ghosts. I projected it on a piece of Poly Stretch (essentially spandex) in my garage for Halloween in 2012. The neighborhood kids loved it.

Corum + Guerrette

A small web shop in Downtown LA

In January of 2009 Morgan Corum and myself finally did what we’d been talking about for 3 years, start a company. C+G was born. We had the honor of working on a variety of creative projects with various clients and agencies throughout LA. We flexed our creative muscles did extra reps for bonus points and ultimately came out stronger on the other end.

At our peak we were a small ship with 4 guys working out of the old Crocker Bank building now know as the Spring Arts Tower in Downtown LA. Our focus was on rock solid minimal Flash content for the web.

The realities of running a business, managing a team, getting new work and keep everyone’s bills paids came to a head in the end of 2010 when we closed up shop. It was a good 2 year run and I learned a great deal from the experience.

Hero for a summer

Setting up shop in Santa Monica

Backward Heroes are long time clients and good friends. I’ve been working with Ryan Antista and Dave Nichols on various entertainment projects since 2007. Ryan has incredible design sense and keeps things fresh. He’s good at coming up with crazy ideas too pushing me to improve my development skills.

I packed up my home office and moved in for a few months over the summer of 2012. My role was production manager which entailed managing all aspects of development including wireframing, UI and UX, resource management, client relations and programming.

projected visual stimulus

I was an avid VJ between 2001 and 2004 and spent much my time creating content, traveling to gigs and setting up gear. One of the tools I used regularly in my visual creations was Flash. There were a handful of folks internationally creating VJ loops with Flash as well. I decided to setup a loop sharing site and dubbed it triggerMotion.

Another tool of choice, the brain behind my performances, was Resolume. A big features that brought me to Resolume was it’s ability to play Flash content. In addition, there was an API I could tap into to essentially code my own visual plugins. I did just that and created a niche marketplace.

Another 2012 resolution of  mine was to release a new plugin pack. I released it on December 30, 2011.

String DNA

Your words visualized

String DNA is a data visualization project built by Corum + Guerrette that generates an image from a short string of text. While brainstorming an internal art project, we thought rather than using a large data set to create something intriguing, what’s the smallest bit of data we could use?  What could we do with something as simple as a name?

Pursuing that concept we established a few ground rules: No use of random numbers, no arbitrary hard-coded values and no pre-made graphic assets. That left us with one value to play with, the position of the letters in the alphabet, A=1, B=2, etc…Therefore using a string totaling no more than 26 characters, each letter creates a singular design. Furthermore, the visual output of each letter evolves based on both the preceding and following letter. This creates an ever-evolving output where no two words look alike and even the difference of one letter can result in a completely new design.
